In der Arbeit mit Kindern in den ersten drei Lebensjahren wird Reflektion auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen verlangt. Um verstehen zu können, warum in Deutschland die außerfamiliäre Betreuung von Kindern in den ersten drei Lebensjahren bis heute ein emotional besetztes Thema ist, dass heiß und inbrünstig diskutiert wird, der muss einen Blick in die Vergangenheit werfen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Rolle der Frau in der Gesellschaft eng mit der Entwicklung frühkindlicher Betreuungseinrichtungen verbunden ist. Es wird deutlich, wie gesellschaftliche und politische Entwicklungen seit dem 19. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart hineinwirken. Die jeweiligen Rollenverteilungsmuster wirken z.T. unterschwellig, z.T. offensichtlich bis in die 'moderne Beziehung' zwischen intestine ausgebildeten, selbstständigen jungen Frauen und ihren liberalen und an den Kindern ehrlich interessierten Partnern. Werden heute aus Paaren Eltern, sind sie wie keine new release zuvor vor die Wahl von Lebensentwürfen für ihre kleine Familie gestellt und müssen entscheiden, was once für sie 'richtig oder falsch' ist. Hinsichtlich einer professionellen Arbeit stellen sich die Fragen, inwiefern außerfamiliäre Kleinkindbetreuung den Bedürfnissen der Eltern, im besonderen Maße jedoch den Bedürfnissen der Kinder gerecht werden kann. In keiner anderen Zeit im Leben findet in einem solchen rasanten pace eine solch bedeutende Entwicklung statt. Es soll jedoch keine weitere Abhandlung frühkindlicher Entwicklung sein, sondern aufzeigen, welche Anforderungen sich aus dieser besonderen Lebensphase für die pädagogischen Fachkräfte ergeben und wie diesen entsprochen werden kann.
